🔥 Heating Equipment
What is the difference between Single Stage and Dual Stage Furnace?
The main difference between a Single-Stage Furnace and a Dual-Stage Furnace lies in how the furnace operates and adjusts its heating capacity.
Single-Stage Furnace:
- Operation: Runs at full capacity or is off.
- Efficiency: Less efficient, with more temperature fluctuations.
- Comfort: Can cause uneven heating and more on/off cycling.
- Cost: Lower initial cost, higher long-term energy costs.
Dual-Stage Furnace:
- Operation: Has two settings—low for mild weather, high for extreme cold.
- Efficiency: More efficient, with consistent heating.
- Comfort: Provides even, stable temperatures with less cycling.
- Cost: Higher upfront cost, but lower energy bills.
Key Difference: Dual-stage furnaces offer better efficiency and comfort with adjustable heating, while single-stage furnaces only run at full capacity.
What size furnace do I require for my home?
While exact needs may vary, here is a rough estimate to determine furnace sizing:
- Up to–1,500 sq. ft. Home: 45,000 BTUs
- 1,500–2,500 sq. ft. Home: 70,000 BTUs
- 2,500–3,500 sq. ft. Home: 90,000 BTUs
- 3,000–4,000 sq. ft. Home: 110,000 BTUs
If you are unsure, consult a Go Lime expert to ensure your furnace is perfectly sized for your home and region. They will factor in your home's unique characteristics like the home's age, insulation, and windows to recommend the optimal furnace size.Proper sizing ensures lower energy costs and a consistently comfortable home.
How long do furnaces last?
Furnaces typically last between 15–20 years for gas and propane models, 20–30 years for electric, and 15–25 years for oil. Lifespan depends on factors like maintenance, build quality, installation, and usage.
Regular tune-ups and filter changes can extend their life, while signs like frequent repairs, rising energy costs, inconsistent heating, or strange noises indicate it might be time for a replacement.
Without regular maintenance, furnaces often fail prematurely, sometimes as early as 10 years.Upgrading to a high-efficiency model can save on energy costs and prevent unexpected breakdowns.
How do I know if it's time to upgrade my furnace?
The best time to upgrade your furnace is if it is over 15 years old, needs frequent repairs, struggles to heat your home evenly, or is causing rising energy costs. Other signs include strange noises, poor air quality, or safety issues like cracks in the heat exchanger.
Upgrading to a new modern, energy-efficient furnace with full warranty coverage and yearly maintenance included on our Go Flex subscription will improve comfort, reduce energy costs, and prevent unexpected breakdowns all while giving your family the peace of mind they deserve.
❄️ Cooling Equipment
What is the difference between an Air Conditioner and a Heat Pump?
The main difference between an air conditioner and a heat pump lies in their ability to provide heating as well as cooling. Here is a breakdown:
1. Cooling Function
- Air Conditioner (AC): An air conditioner’s primary function is to cool the air. It works by transferring heat from the inside of your home to the outside. The system uses a refrigerant to absorb indoor heat and transfers it outside, thereby lowering the indoor temperature.
- Heat Pump: A heat pump also cools the air in the summer, just like an air conditioner. It works in a similar way by moving heat from the inside to the outside.
2. Heating Function
- Air Conditioner: An air conditioner does not provide heating. In colder months, you would need a separate heating system, such as a furnace or electric heater.
- Heat Pump: A heat pump is unique because it can reverse its operation. During colder months, it works like a reversible air conditioner, extracting the heat from the outside air and transferring it inside to warm your home. Even when it is -20 degrees in winter, heat pumps can extract heat from the outside (though less efficiently in extreme cold) and bring it indoors.
3. Energy Efficiency
- Air Conditioner: Generally, more energy-efficient in cooling since it's designed for that specific purpose, but it does not provide heating.
- Heat Pump: A heat pump can be very energy-efficient because it doesn’t generate heat directly; it simply moves it. This makes it more cost-effective for both cooling and heating in moderate climates. In colder climates, however, its efficiency drops as it requires more energy to extract heat from the cold air.
4. Cost
- Air Conditioner: Typically, less expensive to install than a heat pump because it only provides cooling.
- Heat Pump: Usually more expensive to install than an air conditioner, but it offers the dual benefit of both cooling and heating, which can make it a more economical option overall.
5. Ideal Use Cases
- Air Conditioner: Best for areas that do not experience cold winters or for homes that already have a separate heating system.
- Heat Pump: Ideal for moderate climates where both cooling and heating are required, or where homeowners want a single system for both.
In summary, an air conditioner only cools, while a heat pump can cool and heat, making it a versatile year-round solution.
What does kW/TON mean?
In the context of air conditioning (AC), "TON" typically refers to "ton of refrigeration." This is a unit of power used to measure the cooling capacity of an air conditioning system or refrigeration unit.
One ton of refrigeration is equivalent to the amount of heat required to melt one ton (2,000 pounds) of ice in 24 hours, or 12,000 British Thermal Units (BTU) per hour.
In practical terms:
- 1 ton = 12,000 BTU/hr
- A 1-ton AC unit can remove 12,000 BTUs of heat per hour.
Air conditioners are commonly rated in tons, with typical residential units ranging from 1 to 5 tons, depending on the size of the space being cooled.
What size Air Conditioner do I require for my home?
The size of the air conditioner you will require depends on your home's size, layout, insulation, and your region's climate. AC units are measured in tons (cooling capacity) or BTUs (British Thermal Units), with 1 ton equal to 12,000 BTUs. Here's a general guideline:
- Up to–1,500 sq. ft. Home: 1.5 – 2 tons (18,000–24,000 BTUs)
- 1,500–2,000 sq. ft. Home: 2 – 2.5 tons (24,000–30,000 BTUs)
- 2,000–2,500 sq. ft. Home: 2.5 - 3 tons (30,000–36,000 BTUs)
- 2,500–3,000 sq. ft. Home: 3 – 3.5 tons (36,000–42,000 BTUs)
- 3,000–3,500 sq. ft. Home: 3.5 – 4 tons (42,000–48,000 BTUs)
- 3,500–4,000 sq. ft. Home: 4 – 4.5 tons (48,000–54,000 BTUs)
If you are unsure, consult a Go Lime expert to ensure your air conditioner is perfectly sized for your home and region. They will factor in your home's unique characteristics like the home's age, insulation, and windows to recommend the optimal AC size. Proper sizing ensures lower energy costs and a consistently comfortable home.
How long do Air Conditioners last?
Air conditioners typically last 10 to 15 years, depending on their type, usage, and maintenance. Regular servicing, such as cleaning filters and checking refrigerant levels, can extend their lifespan. Factors like proper installation, climate, and how often the unit runs also play a role. If your AC is over 10 years old, needs frequent repairs, or isn’t cooling efficiently, it may be time to consider a replacement.
Upgrading to a modern, energy-efficient model can improve cooling and reduce energy costs.
How do I know if it's time to upgrade my Air Conditioner?
The best time to upgrade your air conditioner is if it is over 15 years old, needs frequent repairs, struggles to cool your home evenly, or is causing rising energy costs.
Other signs include strange noises, A-Coil leaks, or freezing. Upgrading to a new modern, energy-efficient air conditioner with full warranty coverage and yearly maintenance included on our Go Flex subscription will not only improve comfort, reduce energy costs, and prevent unexpected breakdowns all while giving your family the peace of mind they deserve.
🚿 Water Heating Equipment
What does BTU mean?
BTU stands for British Thermal Unit, which is a unit of energy used to measure the amount of heat required to raise the temperature of one pound of water by one degree Fahrenheit.
In the context of air conditioning and heating:
- 1 BTU is the amount of heat needed to increase the temperature of 1 pound of water by 1°F.
- Air conditioning and heating systems are often rated by their capacity to either remove or add heat, and this capacity is commonly measured in BTUs.
For example:
- A 5,000 BTU air conditioner can cool a small room, while a 12,000 BTU air conditioner is typically used for larger spaces.
The BTU is important in understanding the cooling or heating power of HVAC systems, with higher BTU ratings indicating more powerful units capable of handling larger spaces or greater heat loads.

What is the difference between Power Vented and Chimney Vented Water Heater?
Power-Vented Water Heater:
- Ventilation: Uses a fan to push exhaust gases out. (side-wall or roof venting)
- Installation: Flexible, can be installed in various locations.
- Efficiency: More efficient, requires electricity to power the fan.
- Energy Use: Requires electricity.
Chimney-Vented Water Heater:
- Ventilation: Relies on natural draft through an existing chimney or atmospheric venting.
- Installation: Requires a pre-existing chimney or vent stack.
- Efficiency: Less efficient due to natural airflow.
- Energy Use: No electricity required.
Key Difference: Power-vented uses a fan for ventilation, offering flexible installation, while chimney-vented relies on natural airflow and requires an existing chimney or atmospheric venting.
What is the difference between a traditional Water Heater and a Heat Pump Water Heater?
Traditional Water Heater:
- Heating Method: Directly heats water using an electric element or gas burner.
- Efficiency: Less efficient, as it constantly maintains water temperature.
- Cost: Lower upfront cost, but higher operating costs.
- Speed: Heats water quickly, ideal for high-demand situations.
Heat Pump Water Heater:
- Heating Method: Transfers heat from the air or ground to heat water.
- Efficiency: Much more energy-efficient, using 2-3 times less energy.
- Cost: Higher upfront cost, but lower operating costs.
- Speed: Slower to heat water, best for consistent, lower-demand use.
Key Difference: Heat pump water heaters are more energy-efficient and cost-effective over time, while traditional heaters are quicker but less efficient.
What is the difference between a Water Heater and a Tankless Water Heater?
The main difference between a water heater and a tankless water heater is how they provide hot water:
- Water Heaters store a large amount of hot water in a storage tank, so the hot water is ready whenever you need it. This is great for homes where multiple people need hot water at the same time, but the downside is you can run out of hot water and would be required to wait for it to heat up again.
- Tankless Water Heaters heat water instantaneously as you use it, so you will never run out of hot water again. They are perfect for ALL households; they are generally 30% more efficient then a traditional water heater plus they save energy by only heating water when you need it.
